The volunteers of VRA Hawkesbury, also known as Hawkesbury River Rescue have either been residents or currently are residents of the river. Some of us work professionally on the river so are very familiar with the region. This local knowledge of the river helps us to evaluate rescue calls and to respond very quickly.
Currently the rescue vessel SPIRIT OF BROOKLYN is moored at Sandbrook Inlet, where 3 rescue members reside full time.
On average, over the past 28 years we have attended 4 incidents a month, ranging from assisting broken down vessels to attendance at mayday emergencies, often assisting police in search and rescue operations. We have co-operated with all other emergency services in various incidents and exercises and are a member of both Hornsby and Gosford LEMC groups attending meetings and providing assistance as required.
Many members are fully trained and qualified in first aid, radio communications, marine mechanics and emergency procedures. Some members are also members of the volunteer community fire unit.
